The Green Fairy (Absinthe)
The inspiration of a 2010 Object by Alison
It will be introduced at SOFA New York, April 15, 2010

During the late 19th Century Absinthe; a green liquor made from wormwood,
became a popular drink among artists and writers in the
Montmartre section of Paris
Frequenting bars with such colorful names as
“Chat noir”,  “Brassier des martyrs”, and “Café du Rat Mort”*
Famous impressionist, philosophers, and poets, gathered together to discuss art and politics.
The drink was known as “The Green Fairy” for its wild and seductive effects on the drinker.

This work is inspired by those afternoons and evenings spent whiling away the hours in such places.
I have taken the liberty to cross time and invite guest who may or may not have been
in the presence of other guests in order to make a composite scene.
Each guest is a miniature copy of their own self portrait (when available)
or a portrait of that person done by one of the artists depicted.
